A Walmart insider just tipped us off to something that could be a genuine first. They appear to be prepping a reset in the upcoming weeks that will introduce a “Vegan Dehydrated Marshmallow” to store shelves, and this could be the first time a vegan dehydrated marshmallow has ever been sold at a major U.S. big box retailer.
Here’s what I know so far. The item will be priced at $5.17 and sized at 1.75 ounces, which matches the exact size of an existing dehydrated marshmallow product already sold by a well known marshmallow brand at this retailer. That’s a strong clue about who’s behind it. That brand already sells vegan and conventional marshmallows there as well as a dehydrated version containing gelatin, and that sku matches this one closely so if I’m correct, it could be from the brand Yummallo.
Why aren’t regular marshmallows vegan? Conventional marshmallows normally get their fluffy, stretchy texture from gelatin, an animal derived protein sourced from cows or pigs. That’s why traditional marshmallows aren’t vegan, and while there are vegan varieties out there from brands like Dandies, Good Mallow and Yummallo, there’s not been a dehydrated version I’ve ever seen sold commercially.
Why does this matter? Dehydrated marshmallows, the kind you’d find sprinkled into cereal, hot cocoa mixes or trail mixes, are almost always made with gelatin. Vegan versions do exist from small niche Etsy sellers and boutique brands, but never as a mainstream item sold at a major retailer. If this launches as expected, it could be a first.
