Easy Vegan Pizza Rolls

National pizza day is February 9 and although I love a straight up vegan pie, I had a hankering for pizza rolls but they’re so hard to find vegan. Amy’s makes one but it’s like finding a unicorn. I decided to pizza roll up my sleeves and make my own!

it’s actually not too hard to make these. You’re going to need vegan egg roll wrappers (I used Naysoya brand), your favorite red sauce and vegan cheese and some oil to fry them. The rolling method is what’s important so they don’t burst open.

You could use wonton wrappers too if you wanted as they’re already square but I just cut each egg roll wrap into quarters. You need to thicken the sauce so it just doesn’t ooze out while frying. That will cause a lot of splatter and burn you potentially. We don’t want that.

You’re going to add a bit of the sauce and cheese mixture to one end of the square wrap, moisten the edges with water then fold over to make a pillow shape. You’re going to moisten the ends of the pillow shape then fold and press them over to seal. You’ll get the hang of it the more you fold.

These are a shallow not deep fried item but you could deep fry if you prefer. I like to use just the amount of oil I have to and no more. I suppose you might get away with air frying these but they just won’t be the same I’m afraid. I get the impulse to try and make these healthier but how often are you really going to make them right? I would go for it.

I didn’t make these with vegan pepperoni or sausage but I think those would be an amazing addition. I would just cook some vegan Italian style sausage or chop up some vegan pepperoni and add it to the sauce mixture.

This recipe makes about two dozen so you can freeze these once fried and cooled and then heat them up when a craving strikes! I like to serve these with more marinara sauce and maybe a sprinkle of parm. I hope you like them and that they bring a little pizza joy into your life.

Vegan pizza rolls for the win!

Ingredients

  • 1 package vegan egg roll wraps

  • 1 cup marinara sauce

  • 2 tablespoons vegan bread crumbs (plain or Italian seasoned)

  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon sugar (use if your sauce is very acidic)

  • 3/4 cup vegan mozzarella cheese

  • vegetable oil for frying

Directions

  • In a medium size sauce pan, cook the marinara sauce, tomato paste, breadcrumbs, sugar (if using) and garlic powder on low heat partially covered until reduced. This will take about 15 minutes. Make sure to stir often so the mixture doesn’t burn. Set aside to cool completely.
  • Stir in the vegan cheese to the cooled sauce. Cut the egg roll wraps into quarters, get a small bowl of water and a pastry brush if you have it as you will need it to seal the edges. Your finger will work just fine as well.
  • See the gallery above but you’re going to take each quarter wrap, use about a teaspoon full of filling and place it on one end. Wet each side of the wrapper and fold over like a pillow. Flip over then add a bit more water to each end then fold up to seal them by pressing them down firmly. You don’t want these to open up while frying.
  • Heat about an inch of plain vegetable oil in a sauté or fry pan until hot about 350°. I use a heat thermometer but you can test the oil with just a piece of a wrapper. You want it to fry up nicely and not too quickly and burn. You’re going to fry in batches about 6-7 rolls at a time. Cook for a few minutes on each side, then remove and place on paper towels to cool and soak up any excess oil. Serve immediately with more marinara sauce if desired.

Notes

  • If your marinara sauce is not sweet, add the sugar.
  • Use your favorite vegan mozzarella. I used Violife.
  • Feel free to add some vegan pepperoni or Italian style sausage to these!

  3. Full disclosure I haven’t made this yet, but wondering…. do you think instead of pan frying you could potentially use an air fryer? maybe brush them with a little oil? Imma try it… I’ll let you know if you don’t already have the answer 🙂 Thx for the recipe!

    • I think that should work fine! Im not a big oil frying person myself usually so I get it. Report back if you try!

      • I made these finally and used the air fryer and it worked pretty well! Brushed them w a little EVOO. Found it easier than frying- I tried both so I could compare and my fried ones don’t look quite as tasty as yours 😂 air fryer makes this super easy. Thanks again for the recipe!
