Spicy Szechuan Vegan Glazed Meatballs

Looking for an easy appetizer with a lot of bang for your buck? These meatballs are just the thing. All you need to do is make the sauce, then cook the meatballs and glaze and go!

Most of the ingredients for the sauce are pantry staples with the exception of one. Sambal Oelek. It’s a chili paste essentially and found in most Asian markets. It’s really good and I add it to a lot of things but it’s what gives this sauce it’s kick. If you don’t have it, sriracha will do in its place.

For the meatballs, there are so many out there to choose from that are pre-made but you could certainly make your own. I used one made of mushrooms and they were really tasty once glazed! A sprinkle of sesame seeds were all they needed to be dressed for the party!

If you have sauce left over it would be great on tofu stir fried with vegetables or even as a dipping sauce for spring rolls! It will keep stored in the fridge for a week or more. Enjoy!

These are a spicy appetizer of chewy meatballs glazed with a sweet and spicy Szechuan sauce!

Ingredients

  • 1 package of your favorite meatballs cooked according to the package directions

  • Szechuan Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

  • 4 cloves or 1 tablespoon minced garlic

  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger

  • 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce

  • 2/3 cup water

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce

  • 1 tablespoon sambal oelek or sriracha

  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper

  • sesame seeds to garnish (optional)

Directions

  • Cook the meatballs according to the package directions.
  • Heat the sesame oil over medium heat in a saucepan. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for a minute or two until fragrant. Add all of the remaining ingredients and simmer over low heat stirring frequently until thickened (about 15-20 minutes).
  • Add the meatballs and cook in the glaze until we’ll coated.
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with the sauce in a bowl or plate with toothpicks.

Notes

  • If you don’t like heat, use half the amount of chili paste or leave it out all together.
  • I cook my meatballs in the air fryer to keep them crispy but you could bake or cook in a pan as well.
